[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Back in February, Karine Matte from Matte & Glossy<\/a> had the marvellous idea of having a\u00a0<\/span>pied<\/span>–<\/span>\u00e0<\/span>–<\/span>terre<\/span>\u00a0in the middle of nature!<\/span>
\n<\/span>Just before the big pandemic, Karine had a crush on\u00a0<\/span>a<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>cozy\u00a0<\/span>little cottage<\/span>\u00a0that looked perfect but needed a little<\/span>\u00a0bit of<\/span>\u00a0love.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Little did she know that this project was going to be her escape during the worst months that we\u2019ve experienced.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Instead of heading<\/span>\u00a0down the path of anxiety, she travelled the\u00a0<\/span>road<\/span>\u00a0of creativity at a hundred miles an hour!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>She gave herself a major challenge<\/span>:<\/span>\u00a0to transform the cottage\u00a0<\/span>on a very small budget<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Everything was purchased\u00a0<\/span>second-hand<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>(90%)<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and obviously, she did the work herself.<\/span>\u00a0Imagine: all the stores were closed, so she had to be even more creative with the few means available on the market.<\/span>\u00a0She therefore wanted to share<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>her tips and tricks for decorating on a small budget<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>with us<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

1 –\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Evaluate the project and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>see\u00a0<\/span><\/span>what\u00a0<\/span><\/span>needs<\/span><\/span>\u00a0to be\u00a0<\/span><\/span>replac<\/span><\/span>ed<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”44099″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]First\u00a0<\/span>of all<\/span>,<\/span> you need to evaluate the basis of what is usually expensive to replace:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. The condition of the floor<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. The condition of the countertops<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. The condition of the\u00a0<\/span>cabinets<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Luck was on her side!\u00a0<\/span>The floor had a few imperfections, but nothing dramatic.<\/span>\u00a0The counter<\/span>tops<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>w<\/span>ere<\/span>\u00a0black laminate; it wasn\u2019t peeling or damaged.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>For their part, t<\/span>he<\/span>\u00a0melamine\u00a0<\/span>cabinets<\/span>\u00a0were very clean.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>We know we would hate them<\/span>\u00a0at home<\/span>, but at the cottage, they\u2019re perfect!\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

    2 –\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Make a list of the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>item<\/span><\/span>s that can be replaced at a low cost<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

    1. The\u00a0<\/span>cabinet<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>handles<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    2. The light fixtures<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    3. The taps<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      To match the black countertops<\/span>, Karine replaced the handles with small<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>matte-black<\/span>\u00a0knobs.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      Cost: $135\u00a0<\/strong>[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”44107″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]Since the lighting was quite\u00a0<\/span><\/span>outdated<\/span><\/span>, it was essential to install<\/span><\/span>\u00a0a track.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Long live the classifieds:\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Kijiji, Marketplace<\/span><\/span>, etc.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>She found a track for $20<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

      3-\u00a0<\/span><\/span>What can I modify, remove, or replace?<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

      1. Can I remove the\u00a0<\/span>cabinets<\/span>\u00a0and replace them with<\/span>\u00a0shelves?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
      2. Can I modify the kitchen island?\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
      3. Can I add a backsplash?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        \u00a0<\/span>Do you find your cabinets\u00a0<\/span>to be<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>un<\/span>recoverable?\u00a0<\/span>Don\u2019t panic<\/span>!<\/span>\u00a0Do like Karine and replace your cabinets with shelves.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Many hardware stores<\/span>\u00a0sell<\/span>\u00a0solid, inexpensive wood planks.<\/span>\u00a0This is the\u00a0<\/span>perfect<\/span>\u00a0place to put beautiful objects and\u00a0<\/span>set the<\/span>\u00a0\u201ctone\u201d\u00a0<\/span>for<\/span>\u00a0the kitchen!<\/span>\u00a0To save money, Karine used<\/span>\u00a0scrap wood from her new balcony.<\/span>\u00a0She then found metal brackets<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0which she<\/span>\u00a0spray-painted white.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Guaranteed impact!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_single_image image=”44105″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]For the central island, which took up a lot of room in this small space,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Karine decided to replace it with a smaller<\/span><\/span>, airier sideboard.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>It\u2019s always handy to keep a work<\/span><\/span>\u00a0surface<\/span><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>To keep this inexpensive, choose a piece of furniture through the classifieds.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>The sideboard was found for $100<\/strong>!<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”44103″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

        Finally, to<\/span>\u00a0radically change the look of your kitchen for a small price, add a backsplash!\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

        Karine decided to do just that with the backsplash of her dreams!<\/span>\u00a0A bolder colour: green, which remains the predominant colour in\u00a0<\/span>her<\/span>\u00a0cottage.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

        \u00a0<\/span>She settled on the Artisan<\/a> model in moss green. Adding a ceramic backsplash is a job that you can do yourself.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

        \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
