Maison Nyckel : The Art of Cozy Minimalism

Le minimalisme chaleureux : conversation avec la maison de design Maison Nyckel.

A Conversation with Geneviève and Laurence from Maison Nyckel

Minimalism invites silence. When well-conceived, it soothes, structures space, and relies on elegance to highlight the essentials. At La Tuilerie, we find this refined vision truly inspiring, and we are proud to share it with Maison Nyckel, a design house specialized in high-end interior design.

We spoke with this passionate team about their approach to dressing space, playing with light, material textures, and tiles to create a unique and timeless environment.

The Impact of the First Impression

Entering a space is crucial and the starting point for all Maison Nyckel projects.

“We first aim to redefine zones and create a visual impact right from the entrance. This can involve elements as simple as a toilet concealed within the bathroom, or a countertop with its underside clad in LED strip lighting or slats. The idea is to create a space that is functional, fluid, and impressive from the very first glance upon entering.”

Nothing is done without intention by Maison Nyckel. Every choice contributes to this initial impression of coherence and fluidity.

All About Light

Light profoundly influences Maison Nyckel’s choices. It reveals textures, nuances colors, and transforms the perception of a space.

“Light transforms space and highlights textures and colors. Depending on the exposure and intensity, we choose materials that react well to light, such as richly grained woods, stones with subtle veining, or lightly textured surfaces. During renovations, if the project allows, we sometimes suggest enlarging windows to maximize natural light. We also select well-designed pivoting recessed lights to highlight specific areas, as well as LED strips and quality decorative light fixtures that enhance the ambiance and reveal the materials to their full potential when thoughtfully placed.”

Light plays an essential role beyond visibility. It structures space and brings warmth to Maison Nyckel’s minimalist interiors.

Texture, The Key to Minimalist Spaces

To prevent a minimalist interior from becoming too bland or impersonal, texture plays a central role.

“In a minimalist interior, it’s crucial to add contrasting and subtle textures to avoid a flat look. Using high-quality porcelain or textured melamine adds depth and visual richness. This breathes life into the space without overwhelming it, while remaining minimal and refined, all in a delicate and elegant way.”

These discreet details are often what give a space its true depth.

The Role of Tiles as the Foundation for a Warm Atmosphere

For Maison Nyckel, tiles are never chosen solely for their practicality; they play an integral role in shaping the ambiance.

“Tiles can become an element of texture and visual rhythm in a minimalist space. Depending on their size, color, and finish, they bring depth and dimension while remaining discreet. When chosen carefully, they complement other materials and contribute to a warm and inviting atmosphere, going beyond their practical function.”

Sizes, finishes, textures: every decision is carefully considered to support the overall design without ever overwhelming the space. Stone-effect tiles integrate particularly well with this approach, adding depth and balance without dominating the space. Among other tips from Maison Nyckel:

“Opt for matte or slightly textured tiles, sometimes large for a contemporary effect, sometimes smaller to create rhythm. It’s also important to consider maintenance and safety, so avoid glossy tiles on the floor.”

Finding the Right Balance

Minimalism can be perceived as cold or rigid. Maison Nyckel sees it differently.

Minimalism doesn’t have to be cold: the choice of materials, their form, and their arrangement are essential. Pairing wood and stone, for example, creates a vibrant balance. With the right mix, even minimalist spaces remain welcoming and comfortable, whereas a poor balance in material choices could make the result impersonal.

In every project, minimalism requires choices. A subtle interplay between materials, textures, and proportions.

And sometimes, it demands compromises.

“The most difficult compromise is often between budget and quality or aesthetics. You might want a specific material, format, or design, but sometimes you have to adjust to remain financially realistic.”

It is in the pursuit of balance – between minimalist aesthetics and functionality, between intention, needs, and constraints – that Maison Nyckel’s expertise truly shines.

Through their expertise, Maison Nyckel designs light, timeless spaces, guided by close collaboration and attention to how people live.
