In a kitchen décor, the backsplash is a key feature. You can more easily be bold in your selection of ceramic tiles for your backsplash than your floor. So, don’t hesitate to try something new: patterns, colours, specific sizes or even textures. But first, find some inspirations. It’s fun and will really help you define what you really like. To start your research, we gathered our top 6 kitchen backsplash trends for 2023—hoping this will inspire you in choosing a truly unique backsplash.

1. Small-Size Square Ceramic Tile

Square tiles are a highlight trend for backsplashes in 2023, especially those of small sizes—3″ x 3″, 4″ x 4″ or 5″ x 5″. This trend comes from the traditional Moroccan handmade zellij monochrome tile work, in which each tile is completely unique. This is why this trend values tiles with strong colour variations.

2. Terracotta tones and shades—THE backsplash trend for 2023

This is a trend you cannot miss! Terracotta and warm colours, from brown to orange and maroon, will be everywhere in our home décors. Let’s simply take Benjamin Moore’s colour of the year 2023 as an example: Raspberry Blush. And if we look at SICO’s colour trends for the next year, Brown Tobacco and Faux Leather are two colours of choice.

🛠 Expert tip:

Here’s a little tip! Choosing a grout made for kitchen application is essential. We recommend using epoxy grout for your backsplash. It is easy to clean and minimize bacterial growth. To learn more, read our article on how to choose the right grout.

3. Oversizes Tiling

Oversized tiles are super trendy. Even for your backsplash. They are a great choice since they have fewer joints, thus are easier to clean. Plus, XXL tiling gives the illusion of a bigger space.

4. Silky Matte Finish

There are a lot of ceramic finishes: glossy, polished, matte, textured, 3D… In 2023, the preferred finish will be silky matte. Soft but not glossy, it has a smooth matte surface, a little like the touch of a silky skin. Plus, it is super easy to clean. We can find this finish on several of our tiles, such as the Aurora matte from the Éléments collection, the Texiture wall ceramic collection (Fall/Winter 2022), the Plain collection or the beautiful Alchemy.

5. Textured Tiles

Yes, you read correctly. We are speaking of 3D-textured tiles! They are normally not that common, but that will change in 2023! We are back in the 70’s with our top collection perfectly in line with this trend: the Biscuit. This is a decorative wall ceramic featuring vintage patterns in various dusty colours. Simply beautiful!

6. Green-Blue: Another Trendy Colour in 2023

2023 will also be characterized by green-blue hues. Bétonel calls theirs Vining Ivy, while Benjamin Moore went for North Sea Green, and Sico, Melt Water. How ever it’s called, every expert agrees on a blend of deep green and blue with hints of grey, which beautifully infuse your home décor. It also pairs perfectly with warmer hues like beige or yellow shades, as well as natural materials like wood and wicker.

🛠 Expert tip:

When decorating their interior, people often misinterpret the meaning of dark. It can refer to a colour just as it can refer to the lighting. So, a room can be covered in deep colours without really being dark. Therefore, proper lighting is essential in a home. Obviously, even if a room naturally let the light in during the day, it will inevitably be darker in the winter or at night. Meaning, if you choose to bring darker hues into your home design, don’t forget to create a bright atmosphere.
